USC frats to issue bids 1 week after rush halted

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — At least 11 fraternities at the University of South Carolina can hand out bids to potential new members, a week after college officials halted the rush process because of alcohol violations.

Greek Life associate director Keith Ellis says chapters in good standing can accept new members Friday afternoon. The seven fraternities accused of providing alcohol to under-age recruits during last week’s rush events have until 2:30 p.m. Friday to resolve the allegations.

Student affairs vice president Jerry Brewer says the seven fraternities are working their way through the discipline process. The fraternity’s national offices are working with the school to suggest sanctions including not allowing a fraternity to immediately accept new members.

Fraternity rush was frozen last Thursday after four students drank so much that they needed medical attention.
