Tornado Watch cancelled for the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — The Tornado Watch that was issued for the Midlands has been cancelled after forecasters determined there was no longer a threat of tornadoes in the area. The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee were causing headaches Monday along the eastern seaboard, including for those here in the Carolinas, as its continued trek toward the northeast continued to pull unstable moist air into the area. ABC Columbia Weather Forecaster Jonathan Oh explains, “The Tornado Watch meant the ingredients for a tornado were in the area, but the mixing that could have caused one did not take place.” This follows a very busy day in the weather center on Labor Day, when a Tornado Warning in Newberry and Fairfield counties caused concern for people in the area. The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado did touch down 7 miles northeast of Newberry during Monday afternoon’s storms.
