Wofford freshmen package food for Haiti

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — More than 20,000 meals packaged by Wofford College students are heading to Haiti.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported (http://bit.ly/q0p1KI ) that more than 400 Wofford freshmen spent part of their Labor Day weekend packaging the meals for the earthquake-ravaged island country.

Students funneled rice, soy and dried vegetables into vacuum bags, and put them in boxes with vitamin packs.

Steve Deal with Stop Hunger Now says the food packs may seem bland, but they were chosen to provide the nutrition children need.

The group helped organize Sunday’s operation and will help transport the food to the Caribbean nation.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12, 2010, killing about 300,000 people.

Wofford Chaplain Ron Robinson says the college is emphasizing service to Haiti this year.
