COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Columbia Metropolitan Airport officials say we are safer now than 10 years ago, as security measures have increased and tightened dramatically since September 11, 2001. Federal Security Director for U.S. Homeland Security, Columbia Division, Eric Beane, says his staff focuses intently on ensuring your safety before, during, and after your airport experience. He says they have implemented some 20 layers of security features, including: name-matching your name against known terrorists lists; employing undercover behavior detection specialists who watch your every move; and partnering with other modes of travel like trains and buses, to cover more space. He says 9/11 has taught them to never become complacent. Security officials urge travelers to do the same.
