Interstate 20 traffic stop finds prison contraband

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) — Kershaw County deputies say they found 22 cell phones, 13 pounds of tobacco and cigarette lighters that were likely heading into a South Carolina prison as contraband after authorities stopped a speeding car on Interstate 20.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says officers found the items bundled up in a way so they could be thrown over a prison fence.

The items are legal to possesses, but since they were packaged like contraband, Matthews said deputies seized them and turned them over to state prison officials.

The sheriff says the driver was ticketed for speeding, and a minor in the vehicle was charged with alcohol possession.
