What once was SC’s largest shopping complex razed
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — What once was considered the largest retail complex in South Carolina is being torn down.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/mQtIJo ) demolition is under way on what was originally the Pinehaven Shopping Center in North Charleston that opened in 1959. Mayor Keith Summey operated a backhoe to pull down a wall of the center Tuesday.
Pinehaven was built before indoor shopping malls and was located near the old Charleston Naval Base where it was visited by thousands of sailors.
The city has purchased the complex and plans to revitalize the site with new anchor stores and other businesses.
