Providence, RI mayor studies urban design in SC
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The mayor of Rhode Island’s largest city is returning from a trip to Charleston, S.C., where he met with other big city mayors and studied how urban design can transform a city.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR’-us) attended a national meeting of the Mayors Institute on City Design. Those attending the meeting discussed how urban planning and design can improve a city’s quality of life and economy.
Taveras told the Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday that he’s hoping to apply what he learned to the development of the so-called Knowledge District, an area of Providence opened up by the demolition of the old Interstate 195.
Taveras was scheduled to return to Providence on Friday. The trip was paid for by the Mayors Institute.
