Lowcountry teacher 1 of nation’s unsung heroes
EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A Lowcountry educator is one of six in the country honored as an unsung hero by the Communities in Schools program.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/rcvQLH ) Amanda Fox is a student support specialist at Jane Edwards Elementary School on Edisto Island. Her typical day includes taking a student for dental work or figuring out how to pay the power bill for another student’s family.
Communities In Schools works with public schools nationwide to get support services for students who need them. The program is active in 25 states and the District of Columbia in 3,400 schools.
It’s the second year in a row a Lowcountry educator has won the award. Robin Haggard of Haut Gap Middle School on Johns Island was one of five honored last year.
