Some events at Folly Pier canceled after hurricane
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) — It appears Hurricane Irene did more damage in South Carolina than first thought.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/mVfrE7 ) one of the pilings at the Folly Beach fishing pier was more corroded than expected. Dances set for the pier for Friday and Oct. 7 have been canceled.
The 1,200-foot pier remains open following the August storm. But the mixers where hundreds of people would gather on the pier to shag have been canceled.
Tom O’Rourke of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission says the pier can sway when hundreds of people are dancing and canceling the mixers is a precaution.
The county is having structural engineers examine the pier and it could be several months before the study is complete.
