COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Friday’s morning commute in the Mildands brought with it more than two inches of rainfall in 48 hours, and that caused serious problems for motorists and emergency personnel. Weather officials say 2.32 inches of rain fell in a two-day period, burying cars underwater and creating traffic problems throughout downtown Columbia. Emergency officials say some 20 calls came in to the 9-1-1 call center for flooding issues. Drivers report having car troubles after attempting to drive through standing water and flood-prone areas. Officials warn, never do that. Instead, take an alternate route. Downtown Columbia’s Five Points area, notorious for extreme flooding inside and outside merchants’ stores, surprisingly escaped the downpour’s aftermath. Weather experts add, even though the area was soaked recently, we are still below average for this time of year.
