Elie Wiesel speaks to audience in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel says those who tried to bring mankind to a better place after the horrors of the Holocaust have failed.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/nqaZIC) that Wiesel told two audiences at the College of Charleston on Sunday that the world is still capable of war and hatred, pointing to the genocide in Rwanda and Darfur.

Wiesel survived the Holocaust and said people must act to make the world a better place. He says the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. He says the way to combat indifference is commitment and education.

Wiesel received an honorary doctor of humane letters from the college.
