Chair: Eliminating SC DOT Commission hurts access

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The chairman of the state Department of Transportation Commission says eliminating the panel would take away people’s access on transportation issues.
Danny Isaac of Myrtle Beach tells The Sun News (http://bit.ly/qmx5DA) that the board gives people access to the department.
Gov. Nikki Haley has suggested that DOT would operate better without the commission and that the decisions on highway projects should be left to the agency secretary appointed by the governor.
But Isaac says the Transportation Department was reformed five years ago to eliminate political influence on highway projects. He says politics needs to be kept out of such decisions and should remain in the hands of the people.
