APNewsBreak: Attorney general to check voter data

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s attorney general has questions about how the state Election Commission’s data on voters without photographic identification and will delay a filing with the Justice Department as it reviews the new law.

Deputy Attorney General Bryan Stirling said the state was sending a response to the Justice Department Friday but that was delayed after The Associated Press reported that the election agency’s data had excluded voters listed as in active.

The commission generated a list of voters who don’t have state-issued photo identification.

The Justice Department had asked the state to provide details on registered voters who would be affected by the new law. Inactive voters remain registered and are still eligible to vote.

Stirling said the commission’s methods would be reviewed.
