Deer Related Collisions Rise

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) State Farm reports that 1 in every 140 drivers here in South Carolina is going to have a run in with a deer. Nate Toth, an estimator with John Harris Auto Body Shop near Fontaine Road in Columbia says the slight increase is keeping them busy. Toth says this time last year they saw an average of 1 to 2 deer related crash each week, now they’re seeing as many as 5. Causing a lot of crashes and a lot of money in repairs. State Farm says this is mating season which may have a lot to do with the frequency of deer on area roads. Your chances of crashing into one is at it’s highest between the months of October and December. State Farm says you can try to stay safer on the roads by paying attention to deer crossing signs, avoid swerving out of a deers path, and keep in mind – where there is one there may be more since they tend to travel in herds.
