Tire Blow-Out Causes Fatal Wreck on I-20

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say a sport utility flipped several times on Interstate 20, killing an 88-year-old Columbia-area woman and injuring four others who were returning from a funeral. Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says passenger Nell Barr of West Columbia died after she was partially thrown out of the Mercury Mountaineer about 2:30 p.m. Friday. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner says the driver, 71-year-old Sumter Moore of Columbia, lost control when a tire blew out. Moore, his wife and two children were taken to a Columbia hospital. Carlton says only 67-year-old Beverly Moore has serious injuries. Barr was the only one not wearing a seat belt. The five were returning to Columbia after attending a funeral for a relative in Aiken.
