Campaign debt looms over SC treasurer’s campaign

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftis is carrying a $648,000 debt from his 2010 campaign and is spending more money than donors are giving him.

Loftis filed a campaign finance report Monday for the quarter that ended in September. It shows the debt Loftis created with a campaign that relied heavily on borrowing.

The report also shows he raised $10,000 during the quarter and spent more than $13,000.

Loftis campaign consultant Chris Drummond was paid $9,000 during the quarter.

Loftis spent $1,000 of his funds for a deposit at The Mills House in Charleston. Last month, Loftis asked people to a reception there for White House hopeful Gov. Mitt Romney. Loftis is the former Massachusetts governor’s state chairman.

Loftis and Drummond did not immediately respond to interview requests.
