Shaw Air Base to get $7.6 million fitness site

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) — Air Force and Army personnel are going to be even fitter with a new $7.6 million exercise center opening at Shaw Air Force Base in central South Carolina.

Shaw officials say Friday’s opening of the 23,000-square feet facility provides space for the 2,000 people who work on the eastern portion of the installation. It includes an exercise room, cardio room, free weight and strength equipment room and locker rooms for men and women.

The building conserves energy with sensors that monitor light levels, toilets and sinks with water use sensors and windows treated to limit radiant heat from the sun.

The Third Army moved into a new headquarters at Shaw over the past year due to the Pentagon-ordered closure of Fort McPherson in Georgia.
