ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Anderson County officials say a jail inmate helped an animal shelter employee who was being attacked by a dog.

Interim county administrator Rusty Burns told The Anderson Independent-Mail (http://bit.ly/o7DVd2 ) that 49-year-old inmate Kelly Cooley helped an injured employee at the animal shelter.

The employee was attacked by a bull terrier as he tried to put water in a dish for the dog. The employee’s name has not been released. He suffered wrist and ankle injuries

Cooley is serving a 30-day sentence after being arrested by a pair of bench warrants. Inmates are allowed to work at the animal shelter if they are not considered violent or a flight risk.
