SC deputy shoots man after arriving for help call

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s State Law Enforcement Division is helping to find out what led a Greenville County deputy to shoot a man during a call for help.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t identified the deputy or the person he shot on Friday.

The wounded man was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Deputies said they got a call from a family member about a mentally ill person acting unruly at a home in Greenville. They said when a deputy arrived, he talked to the man until suddenly tackled the law officer.

The deputy told the man repeatedly to stop, but the man continued until being shot in the chest.

SLED has been called in as part of the normal investigation when a law officer is involved in a shooting.
