Dog Fighting Ring Update

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Richland County authorities say 15 of the 24 dogs seized during a September raid on a dog-fighting operation are in foster homes. Sheriff Leon Lott said Tuesday that $1,700 in donations helped pay to care for the dogs. He says the 24 dogs and three puppies have all received their shots, had a microchip implanted and are receiving medication against heartworms and hookworms. He says several dogs are being trained to be service and companion dogs. Lott says deputy Amanda Burwell has taken in a puppy named Stonewall whose ears were cut off. One man was charged with two counts of violating the animal fighting and baiting act. The sheriff says more donations to cover medical expenses and boarding would be helpful. He also invited people to foster the dogs.
