West Nile Bugging Richland County Officials
Crews worked for hours, driving through a mapped area releasing a mist like spray 300 feet into the air. Officials say the environmentally friendly chemical is expected to kill the insects on contact. Tammy Brewer, Director of the Richland County Vector Program tells ABC Columbia News they were initially alerted to West Nile in one specific type of mosquito, that number jumped to three prompting Thursday night’s work. Crews spent Wednesday alerting area residents about the planned work, so they could remain inside during the spray. While the chemical usually dissipates within minuets of being sprayed, officials say to air on the side of caution, anyone who believes they may have come into contact with the spray can safeguard themselves by taking a lukewarm shower. No word on what percentage of bugs they’ll be able to beat with this project, but officials say right now it is their best defense.
