Deputy Deadly Crash
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities say a Richland County sheriff’s deputy who lost control of his cruiser near Shaw Air Force Base and killed a Sumter homebuilder likely had a seizure and will not be charged in the death. The Item of Sumter reports that prosecutors say 36-year-old Deputy George Charles Mickens will not be charged in the June 30 crash, citing the loss of driving ability “most likely due to a seizure.” Authorities say Mickens was on duty and on his way to court when he lost control of his car, swerved and hit a sports utility vehicle driven by 67-year old Philip T. Hawkins of Sumter. Hawkins died at the scene. Mickens is a 7-year department veteran and was injured but is expected to return to work.
