SC Election Agency withholds ID List

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The South Carolina Election Commission said it will seek a legal opinion on whether it has to release the names of voters who may face hurdles when they head to the polls because they don’t have state-issued photo identification or driver’s licenses. Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire said Friday the agency will ask for a legal opinion on Monday about releasing a list of nearly 217,000 active registered voters who don’t have those forms of identification. The law says the IDs must be made available upon request and that the agency can charge fees to cover costs. A list was created last month. Whitmire said the list may not have to be released while the U.S. Justice Department reviews the law. He’s also worried about privacy and who first contacts voters.
