SC zoo animals get post-Halloween pumpkin treat

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Smashing pumpkins are coming to the Columbia zoo, but it’s no rock concert.

The zoo on Saturday is hosting its annual post-Halloween pumpkin smash. Animals are being given pumpkins throughout the day, and visitors are invited to watch mammals, reptiles, birds and fish enjoy this fall favorite.

The pumpkin smash is a form of animal enrichment. Zoo officials say they use activities like this daily to compel animals to interact with their environment.
