14-year-old dead after SC tanker truck wreck

PELZER, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina 14-year-old girl is dead after a tanker-truck crashed into a car carrying three teens, closing part of Highway 29 in Anderson County for hours.

Anderson County Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman said Saturday that Jaela Kelley died from multiple trauma suffered in the Friday night accident.

Witnesses to the wreck said a Honda sedan had stopped at a stop sign, then pulled out in front of the tanker traveling north on U.S. 29. The tanker flipped on its side and sprang a small gas leak.

Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne said neither Kelley nor a 17-year-old from Pelzer or an 18-year-old from Williamston were wearing seat belts.

Rhyne said 51-year-old truck driver Christopher Jennings was not injured.

The state patrol continues to investigate the case.
