SC ranks 8th in hiring military vets as teachers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Classrooms across South Carolina are benefiting from veteran teachers in more ways than one.
The state Department of Education said Tuesday that a new national study by the Troops to Teachers program shows South Carolina ranks eighth in the country when it comes to recruiting military veterans to work as educators.
Schools across the state hired 47 veterans between October 2010 and September of this year to teach in at least seven different subject areas.
Troops to Teachers provides stipends and bonuses to veterans who make the transition to the classroom, and awarded roughly $380,000 in South Carolina in the last year.
