Deputy Deadly Crash
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) _ A Richland County deputy who was not charged in a fatal wreck this summer was at fault in four other wrecks while working as a Sumter County deputy a decade ago. The Item of Sumter obtained employment records of 36-year-old George Mickens Jr. Authorities say Mickens was on duty and on his way to court in his patrol car on June 30 when he suffered a seizure and swerved into an SUV driven by 67-year-old Philip “Tommy” Hawkins, killing him. The Sumter County employment records show investigators found Mickens was driving too fast in three of the four wrecks from 2000 to 2004. He was fined and lost use of his car for 30 days in two of them. Mickens refused to talk about the wrecks with the newspaper.
