SC’s cruise ship terminal wins key approval

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Plans to build a new $35 million passenger cruise terminal on the South Carolina coast have received a key approval from regulators in Charleston.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/v23GVd ) the city’s Board of Architectural Review gave approval to preliminary plans on Wednesday. The vote was 5-0 and means only minor details will need to be resolved before the State Ports Authority can begin work.

The authority plans to convert an old waterfront warehouse into a terminal for the city’s year-round cruise industry.

Those who want stricter regulations on the industry have sued in court. Cruises were also a major issue in the city’s mayoral elections as well. Mayor Joe Riley easily won an unprecedented 10th term in Tuesday’s voting.
