COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — All around the world, monuments, fountains and buildings are being ‘turned blue’ in observance of World Diabetes Day. In 2009, 12 mayors across the state of South Carolina, including then-Columbia mayor Bob Coble, signed proclamations declaring November 14 World Diabetes Day at the request of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Monday, Type 1 diabetics and their families dyed the two Columbia Five Points fountains blue in honor of this event. They hope as people see the blue fountain, they will take some time to learn more about diabetes. South Carolina remains among the top ten states with the highest rates of the disease. The theme this year of World Diabetes Day is ‘Act on Diabetes. Now.’ For more information on the disease you can visit www.jdrfpalmetto.org.
