Haley holding town hall meeting with Alcoa workers
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley is traveling to the South Carolina Lowcountry to talk to employees of Alcoa and their families.
The company has said its aluminum smelting plant uses $4 million a week in power and will close if it can’t negotiate a lower rate with Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s state-owned utility. If the plant closes, an estimated 600 people would be thrown out of work.
Haley, who is touring the plant, has vowed the state will keep Alcoa.
She has said that Santee Cooper has to make priorities and cut while Alcoa has to realize the state can’t give it everything it wants.
