Ft. Jackson Soldiers ‘Chow Down’ for Thanksgiving
FORT JACKSON, S.C. (WOLO) — A massive dining hall at Fort Jackson was transformed into a Holiday wonderland for more 15,000 soldiers, as they prepare to graduate from Basic Training and head home for Thanksgiving. This year’s menu includes: Shrimp cocktail, Roast Turkey, Glazed Baked Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Baby Carrots, Seasoned Broccoli, Green Beans & Mushroom Casserole. Preparations are started at least one month prior to Thanksgiving. Following tradition, the meal was served by commanders, their staffs, and their senior non-commissioned officers of each company as their soldiers passed through the line. Thanksgiving became a national Holiday more than 150 years ago as our nation was embroiled in a long and grueling Civil War, so that soldiers in the field could enjoy some of the comforts of home.
