(WOLO) COLUMBIA, S.C. Thanksgiving is the leading day for cooking related fires and injuries and the third leading cause of death. One of the reasons the Columbia -Richland fire department are asking people to cook with with care. Fire officials say you should always be alert, never leave cooking items unattended and never under estimate the importance of measuring flammable liquids when deep frying a turkey. Failing to do so could cause the oil to spill over sparking a blaze. Chief Aubrey Jenkins with the Columbia fire department says a grease fire can spread very quickly. In fact, if you do experience a kitchen fire, fire officials say you only have a small window of 15 to 30 seconds to attempt to put the fire out with an extinguisher. If it takes anymore time than that, fire officials say you need to get out.
