COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — According to the National Retail Federation, shoppers looked for value and deals and spent billions, even in a sluggish economy. Consumers spent an estimated $45 billion over the holiday weekend. That’s triple the amount spent last year. Retail experts say stores opening earlier and shoppers having a game plan, are two reasons sales were so high. One university retail professor says bigger crowds indicate a change in the psyche of customers and they are more willing to spend. However, he questions whether the trend will continue through the Christmas holiday.
