Goose Creek wins first state football championship
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Goose Creek won its first state football championship by scoring the final 23 points to beat Greenwood 37-21 in the South Carolina 4A Division II state championship game.
Greenwood (13-2) tied it at 14 just before halftime Saturday, then took the lead on Kevon Harrison’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Goose Creek (14-1) asserted itself late in the third by blocking a punt. Nine plays later, Virgil Smalls plowed in from the 1 to tie the game at 21.
Goose Creek blocked another punt out of the back of the end zone for a safety and a 23-21 lead.
Smalls again scored form a yard out, and Tramel Terry capped it with a 31-yard TD run with 5:13 remaining.
Caleb Kinlaw led Goose Creek with 130 yards rushing.
