Coast Guard cleans oil from sunken yacht
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Coast Guard crews and a private contractor are removing oil and other hazardous materials from a yacht that sank in the Cooper River near Charleston Harbor last weekend.
Officials at Naval Weapons Stations Charleston notified the Coast Guard last Sunday evening that there was a sheen on the water that was traced to a sunken 52-foot yacht.
The Coast Guard says there is thought to be no more than 55 gallons of fuel aboard the yacht. The area should be cleaned by this weekend.
