Denmark woman charged with stealing veteran’s cash

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Denmark woman has been charged with using money she was managing for a veteran to buy things for herself, including a luxury vehicle. U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said Wednesday 44-year-old Myrtis Williams is charged with misappropriating veterans’ benefits. Nettles says Williams in 2006 received an initial payment of $188,000 for the benefit of the veteran. Prosecutors say Williams used $61,000 to buy rental property, which she mortgaged for $25,000, keeping some of that money for herself. Authorities say Williams also used more than $22,000 of the veteran’s money to buy a BMW and listed herself as its primary driver. Williams faces up to 15 years in prison and $250,000 in fines if she’s convicted. Court papers did not list an attorney for her.
