Almost 1,300 wreaths being laid on Beaufort graves

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Volunteers are remembering the nation’s veterans by placing almost 1,300 wreaths by headstones at the Beaufort National Cemetery.

The Island Packet reports that volunteers including bikers, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Civil Air Patrol cadets and members of local garden clubs are placing the wreaths on Saturday.

Each wreath has a red bow. The wreaths have been placed in cemeteries nationwide for almost two decades.

It’s part of the Wreaths Across America program that was started in 1992 by a Maine businessman to honor the war dead at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington.
