NCAA Looking Into Watkins Flier
Clemson, SC (WOLO) — A flier has popped up in Florida as well as on the internet promoting an event with the name of Clemson Tiger wide receiever, Sammy Watkins on it. The event flier promotes a Christmas party in Florida on December 23rd. Watkins is a native of Fort Myers, Florida and his name, along with his brother, Jaylen (plays at Florida) appear on the flier along with Brodrick Jenkins of West Virginia, and Spencer Boyd of Florida. A sighting of the flier appeared in a tweet by Sammy Watkins handle. Clemson sports information director, Tim Bourret has told the News-Press newspaper in Florida that Watkins does not tweet. It was reported by the paper that Watkins has his sister handle his twitter account. In the past month, ABC Columbia has learned and can confirm Watkins has his younger middle-school aged sister manage his twitter account. The News-Press also reports an NCAA spokesperson confirmed the organization was looking into the matter. It is against NCAA regulations for student-athletes to endorse or promote businesses or revenue-generating events outside of their universities. A cease-and-desist letter was sent by Clemson to Marcus Price. Price is a Florida DJ who first posted the flier of the event. Price told the News-Press the football players names have been taken off the flier. Bourret says this matter should have no effect on Watkins eligibility for the Orange Bowl. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said today after practice that he didn’t know about the flier and Watkins name being on it until this morning. Swinney went on to say that he’s not worried about it.
