Supreme Court Sides With Columbia in Housing Suit

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The South Carolina Supreme Court has unanimously upheld a Columbia ordnance that limits houses to just three unrelated people. Peggy McMaster, wife of former state Attorney General Henry McMaster, took the issue to the high court after she was issued a zoning violation when city officials found four unrelated University of South Carolina students living in a single-family home. McMaster said the rule unfairly prevented her and other landlords from renting to whomever they wanted. But, the justices on Monday sided with Columbia officials, who say zoning laws allow them to keep order in neighborhoods and ensure massive amounts of students don’t descend on neighborhoods.
