Charleston-based cutter arriving home
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A Charleston-based Coast Guard cutter is returning home after nearly three months at sea patrolling and snaring smugglers.
The 378-foot cutter Gallatin returns on Wednesday.
The Gallatin was at sea for 76 days and patrolled in the Caribbean Sea and the Florida Straits while deployed with a Coast Guard aviation detachment from Jacksonville, Fla.
During the deployment, the cutter seized nearly 2,000 pounds of cocaine and caught five smugglers on a small fishing boat in the Caribbean.
The Gallatin also called in Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Mexico during the deployment.
