COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “Shock, just pure shock.” Those are the words one neighbor uses to describe what happened early Thursday morning in the home just across the street where 47 year old John Madden is accused of shooting his wife in the head. The couple’s neighbor says they seemed nearly picture perfect to her. “Just as pleasant and sweet a couple as you ever wanted to know.” But that changed just after midnight Thursday. Richland County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the couple’s home on Marina Road in regards to a shooting. When they arrived, the victim had been taken out of the home and police say John Madden had barricaded himself inside. He would remain locked inside for several hours, while police tried to persuade him to come out. Meanwhile, Madden’s wife was rushed to the hospital. It’s something neighbors never expected. “I’ve never known there to be any problems.” A background check on John Madden shows that in the state of South Carolina, Thursday’s arrest and charge of attempted murder is the only arrest on his record, to date. Madden remains behind bars while his wife is recovering and their neighbors still can’t believe what happened. “You just don’t, you don’t expect anything to happen in your neighborhood, especially when you know the couple to be so sweet.”
