After hearing rumbling noises in the shed behind his North Columbia home, Cleveland Morris went to check it out. He had no idea a fugitive was hiding in there and that police had been searching for him for hours. After seeing the suspect, 21-year-old Maurice McCreary, flee from the Johnson’s Market on the 5200 block of Monticello Road, police along with K-9 officers, confronted him. They say he had attempted to rob the store. One of the K-9 officers, Fargo, attacked the suspect. The suspect fired at the dog and other officers, striking the animal multiple times. Fargo later died while receiving emergency care. The nearly 10-hour manhunt for McCreary also led to six area schools being put on a two-hour delay. McCreary eventually found his way to Cleveland Morris’s house through an unlocked shed. Morris says after alerting authorities the suspect was at his residence, he can rest easier. He also plans to replace the broken lock on the door of the shed.
