Adult Store Opens, City Council Stiffens Ordinances
It’s been about 13 years since City of Columbia leaders examined its adult business regulations, and they are taking steps to update them. While council members would not admit that the ordinance changes are in response to a new adult toy store opening in Southeast Columbia, they have heard an earful from outraged citizens and neighboring business owners. The controversy stems from the recent opening of a sexually oriented business, Taboo Adult Superstore, in the 4700 block of Devine Street. Other business owners have challenged the City’s zoning and business licensing practices. An attorney from Tennessee, Scott Bergthold, who specializes in litigation for sexually oriented businesses was contracted by the City to offer recommendations and suggestions for a new business licensing ordinance. The document passed first reading. A second reading is scheduled for the end of the month.
