Teen Charged with Murder in Aiken Officer’s Death

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) – A 19-year-old Aiken man has been charged with murder in the shooting of an Aiken police officer. The State Law Enforcement Division said Thursday that Stephon Carter also is charged with attempted murder for shooting at another officer during a traffic stop Tuesday evening. Authorities say 33-year-old Master Officer Scotty Richardson died after he was shot in the head. The other officer was not seriously injured when his bullet-proof vest stopped a shot to his chest. SLED is releasing few details about the incident, but said agents are still investigating. Carter was wounded in the shooting and remains under police guard at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
