Earthquake Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ An earthquake that registered a magnitude of 2.6 shook residents near Charleston but no damage has been reported. The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Thursday the small quake was reported shortly after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday by the U.S. Geological Survey in western Dorchester County near Summerville. The newspaper says some residents in Summerville reported they felt the small earthquake. The report said the quake is the second this month from the underground fault responsible for the 1886 quake that registered a magnitude of 7.3 and devastated Charleston. College of Charleston geology professor Erin Beutel (boy-TELL) says this month’s earlier quake measured 2.2 and was recorded Dec. 7. Beutel says Wednesday’s quake was recorded by seismic equipment in Summerville, New Hope and Simpsonville.
