Spurrier puts Ward in charge of defense
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier says he’s officially put Lorenzo Ward in charge of defense.
Spurrier announced Tuesday that Ward is the Gamecocks’ full-time defensive leader, not just for Monday’s Capital One Bowl game but for the 2012 season and beyond. Ward has been defensive coordinator since 2009.
The announcement comes a week after former defensive leader Ellis Johnson left to take over the Southern Miss football program. Johnson said he would start work for the Golden Eagles immediately and not coach in the Gamecocks’ Jan. 2 game against Nebraska (9-3).
The Gamecocks (10-2) arrived in Orlando on Tuesday afternoon. Their first practice in Florida is Wednesday.
It’s unclear if Ward will also take the title of assistant head coach, which Johnson held.
