Man Had Contraband Meant for SC Prison

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities say an 18-year-old man stopped for speeding had contraband he intended to take to a South Carolina prison. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says an officer stopped a minivan Dec. 23 going 89 mph in a 70 mph zone. Matthews says the officer recognized the driver from a previous traffic stop and saw tobacco and cell phones in the van. Matthews says Jonathan Hugo Gonzalez told the officer he had spent all day near Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, waiting for a chance to throw the items over the fence. Deputies seized 14 packages of tobacco wrapped in duct tape, 10 cell phones and nine phone chargers. Gonzalez was arrested for speeding and driving under suspension, for not paying previous tickets. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
