After Backlash, City Leaders Adopt New Ordinance
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — After an onslaught of negative feedback from companies and residents, City of Columbia leaders adopt a new licensing ordinance, effective immediately, for sexually oriented businesses. Thursday morning, city council leaders adopted a special business licensing ordinance. This changes the way the city handles business license applications for sexually oriented businesses. Among the modifications, these types of stores have to be 700ft. away from locations like churches and schools. Before Thursday, it was 500ft. While the city would not name a specific company, all of this started when Taboo, an adult novelty store, opened on Devine St., causing a stir with neighboring companies and residents. Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin says the new law is necessary. “Any and all sexually oriented business that currently does or wants to do business with the city will have to abide by it,” said Benjamin. “So, within the next 30 days, anyone doing business in the city, these kinds of sexually oriented businesses, must apply for this license.” If, after 30 days, the businesses don’t comply, they could face harsh penalties, like having their business license revoked. With the city’s new business licensing ordinance in place, council members plan to revise its zoning ordinance beginning next year.
