Man dies after beating at Summerville bar

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Dorchester County officials say a man beaten at a bar in Summerville last week has died.

Officials say 51-year-old James F. Beatty of Mount Pleasant died Wednesday morning at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Sheriff’s deputies say Beatty had been involved in a confrontation Jan. 10. They say Beatty was punched and fell and hit his head on the concrete floor.

They say he never regained consciousness. Coroner Chris Nisbet says Beatty died from traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding.

Maj. John Garrison says Beatty and another man were involved in a dispute after a woman became upset with one of them.

Forty-year-old David Michael Sigler of Charleston was charged with aggravated assault. Garrison says investigators are considering whether to upgrade the charge.
