Man arrested in Columbia restaurant shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Columbia police have arrested a 20-year-old man in the shooting death of a man at a restaurant last month.

Gonzales Wardlaw has been charged with murder and possession of a gun during a violent crime.

Twenty-one-year-old Thomas Hoefer was shot Dec. 29 as he was waiting to eat at the restaurant.

Police think the men knew each other.

Police Chief Randy Scott says Hoefer had apparently stepped away from a family gathering to talk with Wardlaw when Hoefer was shot.

Scott says officers are still working to determine a motive in the shooting.

It was not clear if Wardlaw has an attorney yet.
